Long ago, once a year near the village of Wildshade, something magical took place. A rainbow glow filled the sky, a sign that the wild horses of Wildshade had returned! Nobody knew where they came from or where they would return to. But one thing they did know for sure was that the horses were proud, brave, and worthy of respect. The villagers gathered for a race, each horse choosing their own rider. No sooner were they on the horse than each rider felt free, unbeatable.

And then, tragedy struck: the village and the surrounding area caught fire, the flames were unstoppable. The Wildshade horses never returned. The village was rebuilt and the people returned, the landscape recovered, but there was no sign of the horses.

Horses have always been a main feature of Skyrim, and have been in The Elder Scrolls franchise since Oblivion. While Oblivion's horses were nimble and weak, though, Skyrim's horses are slower and hardy. Until the release of Anniversary Edition, the only way to encounter horses in the wilds of Skyrim was by downloading a paid Creation Club addon.

Wild Horses are included with Anniversary Edition in a creation that lets players tame and collect a variety of mares across the nordic homeland. There are eight total new horses to find, including the rare Unicorn tied to its own unique questline. Finding them in the first place, though, can be easier said than done.

Updated April 27, 2022 by Erik Petrovich: Horses in Skyrim are nothing new, but the Wild Horses creation included with Anniversary Edition changes the way players can go about collecting them all. Rather than simply purchasing each type of horse from a Stable, the creation lets players tame them in the wild. Finding them in the first place isn't always a straightforward thing, though. The creation gives players the Horse Map as part of a new quest which serves as an in-game way of tracking down each mount. It's not too precise, though it is a way for players to avoid breaking immersion by giving them a means of locating these sometimes elusive horses.

This in-game map shows all Skyrim wild horse locations, but that doesn't make it much easier to find them. The accompanying book helps a bit with scouting out the appearance and details of each mount, but ultimately they don't tell the player much.

All seven normal horses are found at locations highlighted by red X marks on the map of Skyrim above. Keep in mind that it may take some searching in the general area as they do wander, and no matter the breed they are always labeled "Wild Horse" in-person.

The Unicorn is also added with the Wild Horses creation included in Skyrim Anniversary Edition, though it can't be found wandering out in the world like the other horses. It's only available through the Creature of Legend quest, which begins by reading Soran's Journal in the College of Winterhold's Arcanaeum (it should be sitting on Urag's desk).

When it comes to taming Wild Horses in Skyrim there are a few things to keep in mind: where each is located, what they look like, and the proper taming strategies. Once a wild horse is tamed, it will function just like any other horse and can even be renamed, saddled, or even given Horse Armor which is available as a separate Creation Club addon.

Updated December 17th, 2021 by Russ Boswell: Finding wild horses in Skyrim can be a blessing but players that don't know how to adequately tame them may find themselves more frustrated than anything else. Taming horses in Skyrim can be incredibly useful and players will definitely want to have a horse around if they plan on walking the far reaches of the game's extensive map. In order to give players more information on taming wild horses in Skyrim, the following list has been updated and now includes even more information pertaining to how wild horses in Skyrim behave and other bullet points about horses in general.

There are seven versions of Wild Horses in the Wild Horses creation, with an additional unique Unicorn available only through a specific questline. Some of these seven wild horses have a similar counterpart in the base Skyrim world, but each is of course found out in the wilderness rather than at a specific Stable. Each is labeled only as "Wild Horse" in-game, but nonetheless, each is distinct.

In-game, players are able to purchase horse maps from stablehands across Skyrim which help to pinpoint the location of each of these (although there isn't one available for the Unicorn as it is tied to a quest instead). In Survival mode some of these locations are hard to get to, so be sure to prepare for a long and cold hike in the hills.

Taming wild horses in Skyrim is much simpler than it is in real life. While it can take months or even years to win over a horse's obedience in real life, it takes mere minutes in Skyrim. Begin by locating a wild horse with either a purchased horse map or the text description of their locations in the horse taming book.

Then, when you're ready, walk up to the wild horse and mount it. The wild horse will attempt to buck the player off at regular intervals, ragdolling them and causing health damage if the fall was long enough. It's a good idea to take health-increasing potions beforehand to avoid any chance of dying from this. The horse will run away, forcing players to catch up and mount them again. After enough attempts, a notification will pop up indicating that the horse has been successfully tamed and can now be renamed, armored, or saddled as the player sees fit.

Horses have seen some changes over the years as Skyrim has been through a series of patches and upgrades. There are a lot of things that players may not know about horses, how they operate, what they can do with them, or how and when they respawn. Here's a look at some of the key bullet points that players should know about horses in Skyrim and what they're capable of:

This Red Dead Redemption 2 guide explains how to find and get the best horses in-game -- including the free White Arabian (Elite Arabian) that you can get very early in the game. In Red Dead Redemption 2, horses come in many types, with some having certain advantages over others. Specific horses that are hard to find or purchase also have superior stats in speed, acceleration, health, and stamina.

There are three Thoroughbred coats, and two are found in the wild with reduced stats, meaning the Brindle coat has much better stats, and can be bought as early as Chapter 3, at the Strawberry Stable.

The first roundup was also ripe with the push against wild horse management being overseen by the federal government. States and counties pushed against federal jurisdiction, that they resented in any form; horses, grazing land. They wanted to be able to send those horses to slaughter and railed against, and threatened, the program to find foster homes for the animals that was being spearheaded by Velma Johnston (this later became the adopt a horse program). Sound familiar?

Subjects discussed: kids and the fundamentals of bow shooting; the Pueblo Revolt; the brief and glorious lifespan of the equestrian buffalo hunters of the Great Plains; where feral horses end and wild horses begin; the Blitzkrieg Hypothesis; horse fat in your ceramics; mustangers; wild horse holding yards and adoptions; the flameout of a Navajo horse hunt; dying while stuck in the mud; the baddest mofos of the Pleistocene; the NY Times has a big miss; mountain lions as wild horse predators; poleaxing; and more.

What you might be wondering though is how to get the best horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, and so we explain that, as well as lots of other handy horsy things like how to calm and break a horse, increase horse bonding level, find new horses and anything else you'll need to know about Red Dead Redemption 2's equestrian systems and mechanics.

That's because horses' stats are spread across several categories - Health, Stamina, Speed, and Acceleration, all pretty self-explanatory - and none of them have perfect stats across the board. There's also the quality of the horse's handling to bear in mind too, which ranges in responsiveness, from low to high, between Heavy, Standard, Race, or Elite.

The horses that we've found to have the highest stats across the board then - coupled with the best handling - are the two Arabian breed horses that are only available from specific stables, in Saint Denis or one of the Epilogue locations, after reaching Chapter 4 or Epilogue 1 respectively. There are also certain Missouri Fox Trotter or Turkoman breeds that are pretty great alternatives too, but again they're not available until at least Chapter 4, and all of these will cost you a pretty penny to buy when you finally unlock them.

So, with none of these horses available in the wild or for free, and none of them are available until Chapter 4 onwards, what's the best horse you can catch yourself, from any point in the game after the world opens up in Chapter 2?
